Menagerie Series

Welcome to the Grand Opening of the Menagerie Series,
Sponsored by Fictionista Workshop

Submissions Open

Fictionista Workshop is a non-profit community of writers, editors and readers hailing from various online fiction communities. Some of us have been in reading, writing, and editing for years, while others are new arrivals. However, one thing holds true for all of us: we’ve been empowered to write and share our amateur works with the community because of the unique environment offered by this online venue.

Our goal at Fictionista Workshop is to create a supportive community aimed at inspiring women writers to spread their wings into other literary genres. Our participants will experience a constructive, encouraging environment and assistance such as story guidance, editing, research strategies, characterization, etc., as well as countless other areas in which this community can gather to help new or established writers fine-tune their process.

We hope to continue that spirit of creativity right here, as we introduce the Menagerie Series!

With this new endeavor, we want to boldly enable and encourage writers from all communities to create original works they can be proud of. We hope to capture the essence of our collective creative spirit in bound form; a tangible testament to what this community can do.

The Menagerie Series is for all genres of fiction except romance. To see a complete list of literary genres, check out Cuebon.com’s Literary Genre List. We will be offering two collections in the Menagerie Series: Teen and Adult.

Actual submissions will not undergo a formal workshop process, but are instead completed works submitted by their writers for publication that will be refined as needed by the Fictionista Workshop community. We are here to help writers create their stories for submission by giving them the supportive community environment, tools, contacts, and resources they need to succeed.

Teen Collection Submission Guidelines

  • 3,000 to 15,000 words.
  • Young adult (YA) fiction short stories only (teen characters/voice).
  • Any sub-genre, but content must fit within a “PG-13″ or “T” rating. For more information, see the ratings guide.
  • All stories must be previously unpublished and original works.

Adult Collection Submission Guidelines

  • 3,000 to 15,000 words.
  • Adult fiction short stories only (adult characters/voice).
  • Any subgenre, but content must fit within an “R” or “M” rating. Works of “MA” or “NC-17″ rating will not be generally accepted outside of the Ambrosia Series; however, this will be judged on a case-by-case basis. For more information, see the ratings guide.
  • All stories must be previously unpublished and original works.

Publishing Information for the Menagerie Series

  • Primary distribution for Teen and Adult Collections will be online, in electronic format, across the communities served by Fictionista Workshop.
  • However, some stories may be selected from the collections for publication in a bound book; these selections will be published by Fictionista Workshop. Additionally, we are working with our contacts to explore options for writers of high-quality work who are interested in directly submitting their manuscripts for review by agents and publishing houses.
  • All submissions will be voted on anonymously and submitted without penname attached to promote fairness. This is an open, egalitarian community and selection choices are based solely on merit. Final submissions will be evaluated by a Fictionista Workshop jury whose members will be selected at random from the Fictionista Workshop community.
  • Note: If your work is chosen, prior to printing and distributing, you must provide permission for Menagerie to print and distribute the story (First North American Serial Rights). The rights to sell the work to another collection, and the rights to publish the work in an electronic medium remain with the writer.

Additional Publishing Information

You may use your existing editor; however, all submissions will be reviewed for grammar, spelling, and formatting by trained editors within the Fictionista Workshop prior to being published. You will have an opportunity to see all changes prior to publication.

Regardless of your participation in the Menagerie Series, you may still post your stories online anywhere you choose.

Submit your short-story query letters to menagerie.series@gmail.com.
