She stares at the red clay before her, white lines painted to keep her on the right path. Her eyes focus in; everything zones out. The hush of the crowd falls silent, and the only thing she sees is the track before her and the hurdles that lie in wait. The announcer calls out her mark; she squats, ready, the anticipation building. A second that seems like an eternity passes before the shot is fired, and her body springs forward. Pound. Pound. Pound. Jump. Her body clenches; every muscle tightens as she feels herself fly over the hurdle, landing with a spring in her step. Over and over again she takes each in stride. Her heart is pounding, and her muscles burn with exertion. She looks over her shoulder; no one is there. Anticipation, adrenaline, and exhilaration push her further, faster, as she realizes she is leading the pack. She’s going to win. She sees the tape. She sees the line. She leans forward, her arms extend, and with one last pounding footstep, she feels the gauze give as she breaks through. Flashbulbs blink. The crowd roars. And she feels nothing but euphoria and relief. She did it. Every hour of training, every sore muscle, every hope and dream has led her to this point. The finish. Or maybe the beginning?

I knew that it was supposedly bad luck for the groom to see the bride before their wedding, but what good was a rule if you didn’t break it once in a while? Besides, I was having a panic attack and my maid of honor was not helping at all. I knew that Bella meant well, but she wouldn’t be able to calm me down no matter what the case. There really was no reason for me to be freaking out, but it was my second time going through this and I just needed Jasper’s assurance that everything was going to be alright. “Bells, please let me see him.” I whispered, clutching the champagne flute in my hand, trying to blink away the tears She frowned at me, toying with the small bouquet of flowers in her hands, “I can’t let you do that, Alice. It would be bad luck. Maybe that’s what ruined the marriage last time?” I laughed, placing the glass on the table beside me. “Seeing James before the wedding had nothing to do with our marriage failing. It’s different this time.” I assured her, trying to assure myself at the same time. This is exactly why I needed to talk to Jasper so that I knew everything would be fine. “Bella, please. I just need to see Jazz. It’s not bad luck.” She huffed. “Fine, I suppose it’d be okay if it’s absolutely necessary.” I got up and hugged her as tightly as possible. “Thank you so much.” I breathed, before letting go and picking up my dress so that I could walk without tripping over it I left the bridal room and ran three doors down and knocked on the door. Nobody answered. I knocked again, repeatedly until it burst open. “What the hell is going on out here? Somebody better be freaking dying.” A voice boomed I stubbornly tried to move past the figure. “Woah, woah. Hold up. Alice? Alice what are you doing in here?” he asked, trying to hold me back from entering the room I looked up and recognized Emmett. “I need to see Jasper.” I sniffed, fanning my hands in front of my eyes so that the tears building up wouldn’t ruin my eyeliner “Isn’t that like bad- “Bad luck? Sure, but this marriage isn’t going to happen if I don’t see him and I think that itself is pretty much bad luck.” “But he’ll see your dress.” he laughed, “You do look gorgeous, Alice. I mean.” I stepped back from his grasp and looked up at him, “The last time I did this it ruined everything. What James and I had was fine. We’d been together for years, but the second I said ‘I do’ all hell broke loose and there was one mistake after another until it was too late to fix it, Jazz. We’re perfect now too, even better than what I used to have. What if getting married changes that? I don’t want to lose you. Lose us. Lose everything that we have as a couple.” “Alice, of course that’s not going to happen. Did you ever think that maybe marriage just brought out the problems in your relationship with James? Didn’t most of them occur from the start? Maybe, it was just when you both realized that there was no escaping your differences that everything started to go wrong. We love each other. I love you more than anything in the world and that’s not going to change after some vows and a ring, Alice. This is us. A new beginning. You can’t keep comparing it to the last chapter in your life. This is the beginning. A new beginning and you deserve a happy ending and that’s only going to happen if you forget the past, or at least the trouble its caused you and move on to have a happy life with me.” “You’re sure?” I smiled, looking into his eyes “Positive, darlin, and you know what?” “What?” “I’m always right.” he grinned “I know.” I growled, laughing at myself “Go back and take a breather before you meet me at the alter. In fact, she hadn’t realized she’d had any until they hadn’t been met. So here she was, tired and vaguely hung over, waiting for the bus in the too bright bleached out sunlight. Even though she had a car. The bus pulled up, eventually. Bella didn’t know if it was on time or not. She simply got on and sat down. There weren’t that many people on the bus. Probably because it was New Year’s Day. Perhaps more businesses were closed, more people home. Bella watched closely for her stop. She made her way to the front of the bus, mumbled goodbye to the driver, and got off. Walked four blocks south. Alice’s car was parked beside hers in the driveway. The house smelled like lavender cleaning stuff and burnt-oil-pancake. “Hey.” Bella dropped on to the couch, careful to leave her shoes by the door. Alice was mopping…Swiffering…whatever. “Hey!” Alice appeared. She looked concerned. And tired, like Bella. “What happened last night? I didn’t see you after…” She didn’t finish; she didn’t have to. Bella sighed, putting her feet up. She should help Alice clean the house. It would help to focus on things other than last night and him. “Did you stay with Edward?” Alice prodded, coking her head in expectation. Bella shrugged, and nodded. “But…?” “But when I woke up he was gone. And so was his car. And so was my ride.” Yes, waking up in Edward’s brother’s girlfriend’s house had been even lamer than it sounded. “Did you guys –“ “No.” “Oh.” Alice looked relieved. Midnight hit and he kissed me, like really kissed me.” “Did you kiss him back?” “What do you think?” “So, you guys were kissing…” “And then he acted like he had to go.
