Prompt: Word Prompts: Deterrent Recurrent Abhorrent

OUTLAND IV Betty and Tom picnic outside the town, by a creek, under a tree, on grass. “What got you from Georgia to Outland?” Betty asks. “My nanny.” “How did she do that?” “She raised me while my mother was occupied with being the talk of society and my father too busy being a gentleman drunk. The war came; I joined the north to free nanny. After the war, my family called me an abhorrent rodent, so here I am.” “I thank your nanny.” Tom and Old Stan sit on chairs in front of the jailhouse. “The Santa Fe stage is late,” Old Stan says. “It always late,” Tom says. “I mean later than usual.” The stage driver has the horses at a gallop. One horse post is empty. The shotgun rider is not next to the driver. He stops the stage in front of the jailhouse. “Ambushers wounded my shotgun man, killed one of my horses, and robbed my passengers.” “Go to the doctor’s house,” Tom says, “I’ll be right behind you.” The curious stands outside the doctor’s house. “The bastards’ shot one of the horses, then Sam, from an ambush,” the Driver says. “They wear masks?” Tom asks. “Hell no,” the Driver says, “matter-of-fact, I think I’ve seen them here in town with that cranky old farmer, some time when I ride through.” “The Thomas family,” Tom says. “Their sister wash clothes at the hotel,” Old Stan says. “She has nothing to do with her pa since her ma died,” a woman says. Tom and the Driver ride, on horses, to the farm the Thomas family works for a rancher. No one is in sight. On foot, they sneak to the house, search it, find no one and then go to the barn. The father hangs dead from a beam. On a foot hangs a board with ‘hangs a evil pa’ written on it. “I can’t go any further,” the Driver says. “I got to,” Tom says. “You go and tell Old Stan about this. He’ll know what to do.” “Okay. Be careful, those boys are good at ambushes.” “Their tracks are going west, towards Albuquerque. I’ll ride to cut their trail, maybe.” After he tells the Albuquerque sheriff his reason for being in the town, they go to the town’s blacksmith and horse stable. “Those boys sold their mules and asked where to buy a stagecoach ticket.” “They bought tickets to California,” the clerk says. “Did that stage leave yet?” Tom asks. “This morning.” “Going after them?” The sheriff asks. “Nope. Going back to Outland, have wanted posters made.” “Those boys put an x-mark for their names,” Old Stan says. “So?” Tom asks. “Their sister can read and write well enough to get by.” “So what?” “It’s said that she never forgave her father for putting the strap to her mother until she died.” Tom think about what Old Stan suggests. “Those boys are good at ambushing,” he says. OUTLAND IV
