Twitter Tuesday: 08.31.10
On August 31, 2010, we tweeted: Writers, would you consider forgoing the traditional publishing route & self-publish your book electronically? Why or why not? #TwitterTuesday
@mistresselektra: @fictionistawksp Self-publishing is my last resort.
@mistresselektra: @fictionistawksp it should never be a first.
@Asheyna: @fictionistawksp It would depend on the content. There are a few pieces I’m working on right now where I may do exactly that.
here is the conversation that happened on Facebook:
Lily Kleiman Not if I wanted to be a professional writer. Self-publishing, in the last couple of years, has become a scam. You can’t trust any of those self-publishing companies anymore. You’re better off going to your local quick print place and running off a bunch of copies.
Self-publishing is no longer an option for anyone, regardless of the project.
Tami Winbush ‎@Lily – Publishing electronically does not mean that you are going to be self-publishing. There are independent publishers out there that are just as good if not better than NY. I’d definitely go electronic because more and more people read online, kindles, iphones, ipads, sony, nook, etc. etc. etc.
Lily Kleiman The questions was “…or self-publish electronically.” So yes, in this case, it does mean self-published.
If you want to dicuss traditional publishing vs ebook publishing, that’s a completely different discussion. I have a book published with an ebook company and I don’t regret it. However, realistically, that means my book will never get the attention that a traditionally published book gets, or more importantly, the book sales. That’s just reality.
Tami Winbush Sorry @Lily – guess I’m having a blond moment today….which happens a lot lately – forgive me.
Lily Kleiman No harm done, Tami
It’s easy to misread something on Facebook
Jessica Vance I would, I think….. Is that like I am, I say? And is there pay?
Alan Smith Never. But really it depends on the reason you’re writing the book. If it’s money then it wouldn’t be a good idea to self-publish if you’re not famous as marketing the book yourself will be difficult. I[‘ve seen writers spend a couple of thousands and end up selling ten copies. Ten! Better to start a blog than waste your time and money going the the self-publishing route.
Good thing is I write scripts so publishing hardly worries me.
